Follow Kallikratis' snake shaped road (see photo in older post) to get a view of the Frangokastello plain. In this photo, apart from the famous Frangokastello fortress, you can also notice Monachus Monachus Apartments.

It is only a few minutes drive from Frangokastello. The amazing thing was that there were three different sets of rock in the sea and each one of them was home to a different type of birds. The first and closest one was occupied by rock doves, the middle by herring gulls and the third one by adult and juvenile shags (the one in this photo).

The Greek Mountaineering Club of Rethymno in collaboration with the Pan Cretan Net Against Industrial RES will be organizing an excursion to Asiderota's peak of Ag. Vasilios (South Rethymno, near the villages of Akoumia and Ardaktos)
At the top of the mountain there are 11 wind turbines of 0,9 MW each, total power of 9,6 MW.

Επίσκεψη απο τον ΕΟΣ Ρεθύμνου στις ανεμογεννήτριες του Ασιδέρωτα και ενημέρωση από το Παγκρήτιο Δίκτυο Αγώνα Κατά Των Β.Α.Π.Ε.
Ο Ορειβατικός Σύλλογος Ρεθύμνου σε συνεργασία με το Παγκρήτιο Δίκτυο αγώνα κατά των Βιομηχανικών Α.Π.Ε. (ΠΔΑΚβΑΠΕ) θα πραγματοποιήσει διαδρομή στην κορυφή Ασιδέρωτα Αγ. Βασιλείου (νότιο Ρέθυμνο, κοντά στα χωριά Ακούμια και Άρδακτος).
Στην κορυφή του βουνού υπάρχει Αιολικός σταθμός παραγωγής ενέργειας 9,6 ΜW με 11 ανεμογεννήτριες 0,9 MW η κάθε μία.
Θα γίνει πεζοπορία και ενημέρωση. Βαθμός Δυσκολίας 1.
Η διαδρομή διαρκεί 2 ώρες περίπου σε χωματόδρομο (το μονομάτι έχει καταστραφεί από την διάνοιξη του δρόμου).
Εναλλακτικά όσοι θέλουν μπορούν να ανέβουν με αυτοκίνητο.

The 4th Shepherd & Cheese Festival is scheduled to happen on Sunday, July 31st, 2011 at 18:00 at Zoniana, Rethymno by the Cultural Association of Zoniana , as part of the municipality's summer events.
The event will include:
- Presentation and cutting of 1ton largest in the world kefalograviera (cheese)(documentation for Guinness World Records)
- Introduction to local flavors by the women of the village and the Club of Cretan Chefs
- Music Concert by Vasili Skoula, Giota Nega and Hari Nikiforo
- Painting Exhibition by Parasiri Gianni (Painter of Psiloritis)
Final touching up of the upcoming 2011 Wine Festival that will be held from 23rd - 28th of July in Rethymno and already counts 70 years of life. The organizing committee finalized the schedule and it seems that all is now ready for the special summer event.
In addition to the now famous wine testing and exhibition of traditional products, many surprises and variety of events await the visitors this year. There will be exhibition of wine and raki by amateur producers, program with visual and ecological interventions for the children and evenings full of music that will satisfy all the tastes, always accompanied by wine. Plus, the guests can participate in dance and cooking competitions planned for both children and adults. The Municipality of Rethymno aims in amusing all the festival's guests.
In this difficult economical era, where all the Greek products need to be re-promoted in local and foreign markets, the wine festival, for the third year in a row, works as the forefront of advertising for high quality traditional products to become widely known both locally and internationally.
The final festival program will be shortly announced. Rethymno Wine Festival invites everyone to live a unique experience designed to familiarize guests with traditional products that form the basis of Cretan dietary culture.
Στην τελική ευθεία έχουν μπει οι προετοιμασίες για τη Γιορτή του Κρασιού που φέτος θα πραγματοποιηθεί από 23-28 Ιουλίου. Η οργανωτική επιτροπή έχει ήδη καταλήξει με το πρόγραμμα και φαίνεται ότι όλα είναι πια έτοιμα για την ξεχωριστή αυτή καλοκαιρινή διοργάνωση της πόλης μας που μετράει ήδη 70 χρόνια ζωής.
Πολλές εκπλήξεις αλλά και ποικιλία εκδηλώσεων περιμένουν και φέτος τους επισκέπτες, μια που αυτές περιλαμβάνουν πέρα από την γνωστή πια δοκιμή οίνου και την έκθεση παραδοσιακών προιόντων, ανταλλαγή απόψεων ανάμεσα στους παραγωγούς αλλά και τους πιο ειδικούς του οίνου. Ειδικά φέτος θα υπάρχουν και βραδιές που θα είναι αφιερωμένες στους ερασιτέχνες παραγωγούς οίνου και τσικουδιάς που θα μπορούν κι εκείνοι να εκθέσουν το προιόν τους. Δε θα λείψει το παιδικό πρόγραμμα με εικαστικές και οικολογικές παρεμβάσεις αλλά και βραδιές γεμάτες μουσική για όλα τα γούστα πάντα συνοδεία οίνου. Ακόμα διαγωνισμοί χορού αλλά και μαγειρικής για μικρούς και μεγάλους.
Είναι βέβαιο ότι τα παραπάνω θα ικανοποιήσουν απόλυτα τόσο το νεανικό κοινό όσο και τους μεγαλύτερους σε ηλικία επισκέπτες της γιορτής καθώς και τους πολυάριθμους επισκέπτες της πόλης μας.
Σε μια εποχή που κάθε τι ελληνικό φαίνεται να επαναδιεκδικεί τη θέση του στην αγορά, ντόπια και ξένη, το κρασί μπαίνει- για τρίτη συνεχή χρονιά- δυναμικά στο προσκήνιο μέσα από μια γιορτή που φιλοδοξεί να δώσει στα εξαιρετικής ποιότητας ντόπια προιόντα του τόπου μας την ευκαιρία να γίνουν ευρύτερα γνωστά τόσο σε μας όσο και στους ξένους επισκέπτες.
Το πρόγραμμα της γιορτής που θα ανακοινωθεί πολύ σύντομα θα καλεί όλους σε μια ανεπανάληπτη οινική και όχι μόνο εμπειρία που σκοπό έχει τη γνωριμία με προιόντα που αποτελούν τη βάση του διατροφικού μας πολιτισμού.
