Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) - Γελαδάρης (Ερωδιός)

A few days ago, the weather in Frangokastello was moody again due to heavy dust from the Sahara. That effect lasted for three days.

Πριν μερικές ημέρες στο Φραγκοκάστελλο αλλά και γενικότερα σ' ολόκληρη την υπόλοιπη Ελλάδα επικρατούσε το φαινόμενο της σκόνης απο τη Σαχάρα. Για τρείς ημέρες η ατμόσφαιρα ήταν αρκετά φορτισμένη.

During that period an unexpected guest arrived. It is called Cattle Egret. It is part of the heron species (family Ardeidae). It takes its name from its feeding habits. It tends to follow cattle or other domestic mammals, such as horses, in order to remove and eat ticks and flies. Some populations of Cattle Egrets are migratory, others are sedentary.

Εκείνες τις ημέρες όμως, δεχτήκαμε μια απρόσμενη επίσκεψη. Ονομάζεται Γελαδάρης. Ανήκει στην οικογένεια Ερωδιίδαι, τάξη πελαργόμορφα. Το όνομα του προέρχεται απο τις διατροφικές του συνήθειες. Ακολουθεί κοπάδια αγελάδων ή άλλα οικόσιτα ζώα, όπως τα άλογα, και τρέφεται με παρασιτικά έντομα. Είναι ένα μερικώς μεταναστευτικό πτηνό.

Our cat, observing the new arrival and calculating the possibility to have a feast. Thankfully, the pondering lasted only for a couple of minutes, after that she lost interest and left.

Η γάτα μας ενώ αναρωτιέται τι πτηνό είναι αυτό και αν θα το καταφέρει :-). Ευτυχώς ασχολήθηκε ελάχιστα μαζί του κατά τη διάρκεια της παραμονής του.

What was really fascinating was its quick adaptation to a new environment. It was cautious enough not to approach us, still it did not pass the opportunity to have a shower when the grass sprinklers initiated.

Αρκετά κοινωνικό πτηνό, όχι τόσο για να μας πλησιάσει αλλά τόσο ώστε να μην χάσει την ευκαιρία να δροσιστεί στους ψεκαστήρες.

Τέλος, αναχωρόντας για ένα πιθανόν μακρύ ταξίδι. Ελπίζουμε να μας ξαναεπισκεφτεί και του χρόνου.

Palm tree bird nest - Φωλιά πουλιού σε φοινικόφυλλο

One of our main gardening jobs, before starting the summer season in our apartments, is to chop any old leaves from the palm trees. It is a job that requires working long hours under the sun while being cautious not to chop our own hands. Anyway, after finishing a number of palm trees we decided to start gathering the leaves from the grass and that is when we saw this amazing bird nest. In the seven years that we run the apartments, this is the first time that we come across something like this. I guess birds will never stop to amaze us.

Μια απο τις βασικές δουλειές μας στον κήπο, πριν την έναρξη της καλοκαιρινής σεζόν, είναι το κλάδεμα των φοινικόφυλλων. Χρονοβόρα και αρκετά κοπιαστική δουλειά. Φέτος όμως, μας περίμενε μια έκπληξη. Ξεκινόντας να μαζεύουμε τα φοινικόφυλλα απο το γρασίδι ανακαλύψαμε αυτή τη φανταστική φωλιά πουλιού. Στα εφτά χρόνια λειτουργίας των διαμερισμάτων, αυτη είναι η πρώτη φορά που συναντάμε κάτι τέτοιο, απο ότι φαίνεται οι φτερωτοί μας φίλοι είναι αρκετά ευρηματικοί και περίτεχνοι.

Agia’s Lake

Agia Lake is located on the southeast edge of Platania at the Chania Prefecture on the border with New Kydonia. It lies 9 km from Chania. It consists of 450 acres of protected area and there discovered a rare frog species threatened with extinction.

The lake has unfortunately a fairly small scale due to irrigation projects that have been in order to release water to the valley of Fasas. Thus, the water level varies significantly over time having a significant impact on the appearance and number of birds in the area.

The main objective of local government is to transform the area into an environmental park and take advantage of the former hydroelectric plant because currently  the lake is threatened with destruction due waste disposal in it, uncontrolled grazing and illegal hunting. 

 

 

Λίμνη Αγιάς

Η λίμνη Αγιάς εντοπίζεται στο νοτιοανατολικό άκρο του Δήμου Πλατανιά Νομού Χανίων στα σύνορα με τον Δήμο Νέας Κυδωνίας. Απέχει 9 χλμ. από τα Χανιά. Αποτελείται από 450 στρέμματα προστατευόμενης περιοχής και εκεί εντοπίστηκε ένα σπάνιο είδος βατράχου που απειλείται με εξαφάνιση.

Η λίμνη δυστυχώς έχει αρκετά μειωμένο μέγεθος λόγω των αρδευτικών έργων που έχουν γίνει στην περιοχή ώστε να απελευθερώνεται νερό στην κοιλάδα του Φασά. Έτσι, η στάθμη του νερού διαφέρει κατά καιρούς σημαντικά  Αυτό έχει σημαντική επίπτωσης την εμφάνιση και στον αριθμό της ορνιθοπανίδας της περιοχής.

Ο κύριος στόχος της τοπικής αυτοδιοίκησης είναι να μετατραπεί ο χώρος σε περιβαλλοντικό πάρκο και να αξιοποιηθεί το πρώην υδροηλεκτρικό εργοστάσιο της ΔΕΗ, αφού στην παρούσα φάση απειλείται με καταστροφή εξαιτίας της απόθεσης αποβλήτων στην λίμνη, της ανεξέλεγκτης βόσκησης και της παράνομης θήρας.
