Sitanos, east Crete, a photovoltaic village - Σίτανος, ανατολική Κρήτη, το φωτοβολταϊκό χωριό

Sitanos is a small village in east Crete, under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Sitia. Its population consists vastly from elderly residents. It is situated 18 km away from Sitia on the Piskokefalo road at an altitude of 620 m.

So far, Sitanos was famous for some of the following information: Its name is connected with ancient Itanos. Approximately, one kilometer north west of the village, at an altitude of 610 meters, in the area of "Pateliko", is one of the largest caves of Crete, "Exo Latsidi", that seems to have been an underground river bed. In addition, a Minoan farmhouse has been discovered to the southwest of the village. Finally, a wonderful fountain of Ottoman architecture, recently restored, can be found close to the end of the village in an area called "Vrysi".

However, lately things have changed. Nowadays, Sitanos is a small village crowed with photovoltaics. It seems that the idea of using renewable energy sources in order to save our planet, has its limitations too. Just watch the video and note the proximity of the multiple photovoltaics to the houses. It does not need any translation, the image speaks on its own. Ancient Greeks had a saying "Pan Metron Ariston", meaning everything is best in moderation. This should have been the case here too. Bear in mind that what is being criticized here is not the use of the photovoltaics but the way they were imposed on the locals and their proximity to the inhabitants. 

Ο Σίτανος είναι ένα μικρό χωριό στα ανατολικά της Κρήτης, στο νομό Σητείας. Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του πληθυσμού του είναι ηλικιωμένοι. Απέχει 18 χιλ. από τη Σητεία, στο δρόμο Πισκοκεφάλου και σε υψόμετρο 620 μ.

Μέχρι στιγμής, το χωριό Σίτανος ήταν διάσημο για μερικά από τα ακόλουθα στοιχεία: Η ονομασία του συνδέεται με αυτήν της αρχαίας Ιτάνου. Στη θέση "Πατέλικο", 1 χλμ. ΒΔ του χωριού σε υψόμετρο 610 μ. υπάρχει ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα σπήλαια της Κρήτης, το "Έξω Λατσίδι" που φαίνεται να ήταν κοίτη υπόγειου ποταμού. Στα ΝΔ του χωριού βρέθηκε Μινωική αγροικία. Στη θέση Βρύση στην άκρη του χωριού υπάρχει μια θαυμάσια κρήνη Οθωμανικής αρχιτεκτονικής που αναστηλώθηκε πρόσφατα.

Ωστόσο, τον τελευταίο καιρό τα πράγματα έχουν αλλάξει. Σήμερα, το χωριό Σίτανος είναι πλημμυρισμένο με φωτοβολταϊκά. Φαίνεται ότι η υιοθέτηση ανανεώσιμων πηγών ενέργειας, προκειμένου να σώσουμε τον πλανήτη μας έχει επίσης τα όριά της. Απλά δείτε το βίντεο και θα καταλάβετε τι συμβαίνει, η εικόνα μιλάει από μόνη της. Οι αρχαίοι Έλληνες είχαν ένα ρητό "παν μέτρον άριστον", που σημαίνει ότι τα πάντα είναι καλύτερα με μέτρο. Να θυμίσουμε ότι αυτό που επικρίνεται εδώ δεν είναι η χρήση των φωτοβολταϊκών, αλλά ο τρόπος με τον οποίο επιβλήθηκαν στους ντόπιους και η εγγύτητα τους στα σπίτια.
