Off Season Photo Moments Pt.1

This is an album of a few photos that we found interesting and thought it will be nice to share with you. I chose to split them in two parts. In part one, the photos are spontaneously taken from inside the car as we drove around western Crete. While part two includes in addition, some sightseeing spots that we had to show you.

Please keep an open mind on our comments, we like to see the fun side of things, it makes life easier :-)

All authentic Sfakian signs have bullet holes. It is protection against strong winter winds.

Goat lane. At least they are using the shoulder lane. Goats seem to understand the automobile's direction and adjust their position accordingly, it is sheep you have to be careful of.

Small churches made either of metal or stone are vastly scattered around the whole Greek region. Unfortunately, they mark the place where a driver lost his/her life and have usually a candle sparkling in the night. Note them and respect them, they can be life savers for the rest of the passing drivers, especially in foggy nights.

Sfakian ram sheep. The red color on its wool marks the herd it belongs to and thus its owner. Also, other markings can be found on its ears. During mating season they tend to bump on shinny things as they confuse their reflection for a rival ram.

Mother and baby sheep. Very cute to observe, still, dangerous to drive by. Baby sheep notice cars literally the last minute, resulting in panic movements to approach the security of their mother.

To my opinion, this is the best road turn, photo-wise, in the whole of the Sfakian region. You have three signs to be aware of.  Domestic animals, narrow road ahead, and difficult right turn. I think the only sign missing is falling rocks. However, the bus filled my expectations and the road.

Gavdos and Gavdopoula. As you descend from Imbros village towards the Sfakian plain you get the chance to see a magnificent sunset. Even if it is winter and the sky is full with clouds, the view is amazing.

This church is close to the entrance of Komitades village. The reason I included it in the album is because it is really difficult to get the whole church in your photo frame as you drive by. The street is narrow, allowing only a single car to pass each time, the mirror on the side of the church proves it. Thus, this is a difficult spot to stop and shoot. Night made it a little bit easier as you could expect to see light from an approaching car.

And last, but not least. One day, upon arrival back to the apartments, we noticed a man on top of the Frangokastello fortress. Please respect the monuments. If it were not for the railings access would not be allowed on top of the tower. We thought adult supervision was compulsory only for children and not for grown up babies. Leave climbing to the goats.

Hidden treasure of oil and gas south of Crete - Κρυμμένος θησαυρός από φυσικό αέριο και πετρέλαιο νότια της Κρήτης

Antonis Foskolos researcher and founder of the Division of Mineral Resources at TUC "sees" the south of Crete as a small "Alaska"and talks about mythical reserves of around 3 trillion cubic meters of natural gas, which if exploited can finally get the country out of the crisis. Other scientists are more reluctant and state, highlighting the geological peculiarities of the region, that without studies, nothing is given.

The researcher and emeritus Professor - Consultant of the Canadian government argued at a recent event in Ierapetra that at the marine region south of Ierapetra in Lassithi, the so called Basin of Herodotus holds 3 trillion cubic meters of gas, equivalent to 19 billion barrels of oil. That is an "Alaska". He also mentioned deposits off the Bay of Messara in Heraklion and to the south of Gavdos.

Surveys

Mr Foscolos said that he "reports data resulting from the surveys of Norwegians, French and Americans who searched for years the area of Crete and the Libyan sea without the Greek authorities knowing about it", he also added that if the investigations were to start today then the Greeks will be smiling again in 4 years. According to the researcher 60 submarine volcanoes have been identified in the area south of Crete, while Cyprus with only 4 volcanoes has been estimated to have 3 trillion cubic meters of natural gas and Egypt with 8 volcanoes possesses around 8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas .

The Greek side has not contacted yet any preliminary investigations to the South of Crete. Recently a bidding process has started for gathering seismic data in three marine areas in the western and southern of Greece which also includes a section in the sea area of southern Crete that is located within the Greek territorial waters. However, it is not clear whether this section combines the geological characteristics that Mr Foscolos mentioned. Meanwhile, the issue of determining the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) remains open. Perhaps that is why Mr. Foscolos considered as a positive sign the reply of former Prime Minister George Papandreou to the leader of LA.OS, George Karatzaferi, in the Parliament about the intentions of the previous government to delimit maritime zones with the neighboring countries.

Egypt for some time now has begun investigations in cooperation with specialized international companies, including a Norwegian company, in the Mediterranean area to the side of Crete with positive indications so far that there exists a large gas field. Many geologists believe that the geophysical findings that "give" hydrocarbons to the sea area north of Egypt could be also adapted from the Greek side. However, the surrounding sea area from Methana, to Sousaki and to Nisyros gives completely different geological data.

The northern edge of the African tectonic plate has descended under Europe for millions of years creating the so-called volcanic arc and causing geological formations that make it extremely difficult for gas or oil not to leak, even in the case that there exist any deposits.

Areas

Antonis Angelopoulos, the president of the Association of Greek Geologists states that "These are areas which could hardly have hold any large amounts of hydrocarbons, on the other hand, there has not been any exploration yet,". In a situation such as this where the degree of exploration varies due to difficulty sometimes drilling is even prohibited.

Making use of these resorts is a complex bet, as the larger the depth the more costly the pumping will be, due to geological formations that declare it  inaccessible. Therefore, it is not unusual for even confirmed wells to get sealed when the cost of pumping gets close to or exceeds the sales price of natural gas or oil ... pending for new drilling technologies or for the  international price of oil to rise enough to make pumping in these areas profitable.

A few preliminary seismic surveys that were conducted in the sea area off Gavdos, during the 80s, provided data that there exists gas. However, new research needs to be conducted in order to determine its existence. There a lot of myths about hidden treasures to the Greek seas, still, only surveys and drilling can provide real answers.
