E/V Nautilus pioneers underwater exploration in Santorini & Crete - On-line Ωκεανογραφική Έρευνα με το Ω/Κ 'Nautilus' σε Σαντορίνη και Κρήτη

Dr. Robert Ballard, Dr. Katherine Croff Bell, and their team are leading an underwater exploration on the E/V Nautilus to explore ancient history and learn more about the ocean. The expedition was launched on July 21st in the Black Sea, it will continue in the Aegean, Mediterranean, and Atlantic in the summer and fall, and finish in November off the coast of Israel. Nautilus expedition scientists will map the sea floor, study underwater volcanoes, investigate unusual life forms, explore shipwrecks, and more.

The Nautilus expedition is special because it will offer you a chance to take part in ocean exploration history. A satellite dish on the ship will transmit live video and other data from the expedition 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Scientists on shore will use the data to take part in the expedition from afar. But you do not have to be a scientist to share the thrill of discovery. You will be able to hear what Dr. Ballard, Dr. Bell, and their team are saying and view what they are seeing in real time on the Nautilus Live website (www.nautiluslive.org). Throughout the expedition Nautilus will be linked to schools in America, Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey and Israel and the 'Nautilus Live Theater' at Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. USA.

The oceanographic vessel Nautilus is scheduled to conduct underwater research in the Hellenic Arc from September 1st to 10th, 2011. Santorini's volcanic complex and Crete's underwater basin will be their prime exploration sites. The mission is part of the Research - Training Program, "New Frontiers in Ocean Exploration 2011" organised by the Institute of Exploration (IFE), the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET), the University of Rhode Island (URI) and the Center for Ocean Exploration and Archaeological Oceanography (COEAO) in collaboration with the Department of Geology and Geo-Environment, of the University of Athens.

The Exploration Vessel (E/V) Nautilus is a 64-meter research vessel based in Yalikavak, Turkey, owned and operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust. It is equipped with Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs - underwater robots): Hercules and  Argus, which will be used to explore the underwater volcano of Kolumbo, the Christiana volcanic domes and the Cretan Basin.

Hercules

Hercules is a neutrally buoyant ROV that is used exclusively in conjunction with its mating vehicle, Argus, to which it is connected with a 30m length of neutrally buoyant tether. It is launched and recovered with the deck crane, generally over the side of the fantail.

Hercules is tethered directly to Argus during tandem ROV operations. It is the vehicle with the most maneuverability and is used for the most precise and delicate operations. Hercules is neutrally buoyant and is equipped with six thrusters that allow it to ‘fly’ in any direction, like a helicopter. Because the vehicle is slightly positively buoyant, it will gently float up to the surface if its thrusters stop turning.

Using its sensor array consisting of a pressure/depth sensor, altimeter, and Doppler, Hercules can conduct a variety of precision documentation functions. These can include: close-up visual inspection using its high definition video camera; surface sampling using its two manipulators that can place recovered samples into sample drawers or place them in elevators dropped to the bottom from the surface ship above; or precision acoustic and visual mapping of a site using its high-resolution sonars and/or digital stereo still cameras.

Argus

Argus is an ROV that is tethered via a steel-armored fiber-optic cable directly to the ship. It can be used in two different modes of operation: alone, or with another ROV. Alone, Argus is towed behind the ship as a towsled for broad-area visual and/or sonar surveys.

In tandem mode, Argus is typically used with ROV Hercules. In this tandem mode, Hercules is connected to Argus via a 30 m fiber-optic tether. We carry out tandem ROV operations for a number of reasons. First, Argus removes the heave of the ship from Hercules so that it can work on the seafloor as a stable platform; second, Argus provides light from variable angles to lessen the backscatter caused by particles in the water; and third, Argus is equipped with a number of cameras so that it can watch over Hercules while it works on the seafloor, giving us an eye-in-the-sky perspective. Because Argus is very heavy and is connected directly to the ship, we must position Argus by moving the ship, and can make heading adjustments using thrusters on the vehicle.

Στα πλαίσια του Ερευνητικού-Εκπαιδευτικού Προγράμματος 'New Frontiers in Ocean Exploration 2011' των Ξένων Πανεπιστημίων-Ινστιτούτων: Institute for Exploration (IFE), Ocean Exploration Trust (OET), University of Rhode Island (URI) και Center for Ocean Exploration and Archaeological Oceanography (COEAO) σε συνεργασία με το Τμήμα Γεωλογίας και Γεωπεριβάλλοντος του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών θα πραγματοποιηθεί ωκεανογραφική έρευνα στον υποθαλάσσιο χώρο του ηφαιστειακού συμπλέγματος της Σαντορίνης και στην Κρητική λεκάνη με το Ω/Κ σκάφος 'Nautilus' από την 1η έως και την 11η Σεπτεμβρίου 2011.

Σημειώνεται ότι το Ω/Κ Nautilus έχει ξεκινήσει την έρευνα στην περιοχή της Σαντορίνης από το 2010 κυρίως στην περιοχή του υποθαλάσσιου ηφαίστειου του Κολούμπου, μελετώντας το ενεργό υδροθερμικό πεδίο στη βόρεια πλευρά του κρατήρα του.

Επιστημονικοί Υπεύθυνοι της ωκεανογραφικής έρευνας είναι οι Professor Dr. Robert Ballard (OET), Dr Katherine Croff Bell (OET) και η Λέκτορας Δρ. Νομικού Παρασκευή (ΕΚΠΑ), η οποία και συμμετείχε σε προηγούμενους ωκεανογραφικούς πλόες το 2006 με το Ω/Κ ΑΙΓΑΙΟ του ΕΛΚΕΘΕ και το 2010 με το Ε/V ΝΑUTILUS μαζί με ξένους και Έλληνες επιστήμονες.

Το Ω/Κ σκάφος 'Nautilus' του O.E.T. διαθέτει τηλεκατευθυνόμενα υποβρύχια ρομπότ (ROVs): Hercules και Argus, τα οποία και θα εξερευνήσουν το υποθαλάσσιο ηφαίστειο του Κολούμπου, την περιοχή των νησίδων Χριστιανά και την Κρητική Λεκάνη. Τα τηλεκατευθυνόμενα ρομπότ διαθέτουν κάμερες υψηλής ευκρίνειας για την συλλογή άριστης ποιότητας φωτογραφικού και κινηματογραφικού υλικού, ειδικά όργανα δειγματοληψίας γεωλογικού και βιολογικού υλικού, θερμόμετρο και όργανα χαρτογράφησης του πυθμένα με μεγάλη λεπτομέρεια.

Επίσης το πλοίο διαθέτει ένα υψηλού εύρους ζώνης δορυφορικό σύστημα το οποίο κατά τη διάρκεια του ωκεανογραφικού πλόα θα διευκολύνει την εξ αποστάσεως εκπαίδευση και έρευνα μέσω του Inner Space Center (ISC) του URI Graduate School of Oceanography and Exploration. Όπως και το 2010 θα παρέχεται η δυνατότητα της on-line πρόσβασης της ωκεανογραφικής έρευνας στο δικτυακό χώρο του ταξιδιού www.nautiluslive.org, στο οποίο ήδη μπορούν οι ενδιαφερόμενοι να παρακολουθούν τις διεργασίες που γίνονται πάνω στο πλοίο και να συμμετέχουν στις συζητήσεις των ερευνητών. Καθημερινά θα γίνονται συνδέσεις με σχολεία της Αμερικής, της Ελλάδας, της Ιταλίας, της Ισπανίας, της Τουρκίας και του Ισραήλ και με το Nautilus Live Theater at Mystic Aquarium στο Connecticut της Αμερικής.

Το ωκεανογραφικό ταξίδι του 'Nautilus' ξεκίνησε στις 21 Ιουλίου και θα διαρκέσει μέχρι τις 14 Νοεμβρίου ερευνώντας περιοχές της Μαύρης Θάλασσας, του Αιγαίου, της Μεσογείου και του Βόρειου Ατλαντικού Ωκεανού, οι οποίες παρουσιάζουν αρχαιολογικό, βιολογικό και γεωλογικό ενδιαφέρον, σε συνεργασία με το National Geographic.

Mediterranean Festival of Arts Crete 2011 - Μεσογειακό φεστιβάλ Τεχνών στη Κρήτη 2011

The festival will be held in Heraklion, Hersonissos, Rethymno, Chania, Ag. Nikolaos, Neapoli, Ierapetra and Timbaki from 25th September to 5th October 2011. The main goal of the Festival is not just to promote the rich historical and cultural heritage of Crete and Greece at large, but also the contribution of Crete and the Hellenic Republic as a whole to the spiritual development of mankind. Our purpose is to make Heraklion and Crete an influential cultural center of not only of the Mediterranean region, but of the entire world. Within the Festival program there will be held concerts of classical and folk music, performances by ballet and folk dance companies.

The culmination of the Festival will be the Cretan premiere of the great opera Idomeneo, King of Crete, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with the participation of well-known international singers.

The central event of the Mediterranean Festival of Arts 2011 will be the first-ever Crete International Tattoo. Tattoos, these spectacular pageants which blend various genres of military, classical and folk music and dance along with drill teams' displays, historical recreations etc., have long been held in many countries. The oldest and most famous among them is the Edinburgh Tattoo in Scotland, and one of the most successful events of this kind, according to both experts and audiences, was the Kremlin Zoria held in Moscow's Red Square in 2007. In fact, the Crete Tattoo is created by the same team which established the Zoria and made it happen.

The Crete Tattoo, the first of its kind to be held not just on that island, but in Greece at large, is dedicated to the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon, the great victory of the Greek people and the entire Western civilization, and to the 70th jubilee of the heroic defense of Crete against Nazi invaders in 1941.

Στην Κρήτη, "την καρδιά της Μεσογείου" από τις 25 Σεπτεμβρίου έως τις 2 Οκτωβρίου περισσότεροι από 1000 καλλιτέχνες, από 14 χώρες θα παρουσιάσουν περίπου 50 εκδηλώσεις σε Ηράκλειο, Χερσόνησσο, Ρέθυμνο, Χανιά, Άγιο Νικόλαο, Νεάπολη, Ιεράπετρα και Τυμπάκι, στο πλαίσιο του πρώτου "Μεσογειακού Φεστιβάλ Τεχνών".

Στην Κρήτη, τον τόπο που ο Μότσαρντ εμπνεύστηκε το έργο του "Ιντομενέο, Ρε Ντι Κρέτα" και το ιστορικό φρούριο Φορτέτζα, καλλιτέχνες από Ελλάδα, Αυστρία, Ολλανδία, Γερμανία, όπως και η Κρατική Ακαδημαϊκή Καπέλλα του Γιουρλώφ από τη Ρωσία θα παρουσιάσουν τη γνωστή Όπερα του Αυστριακού καλλιτέχνη.

Γυναίκες του Λυκείου Ελληνίδων Ηρακλείου έχουν σχεδιάσει τα ρούχα της παράστασης, πιστές στις υποδείξεις της Μινωϊκής παράδοσης. 

Είναι η πρώτη φορά παγκοσμίως που διοργανώνεται ένα τέτοιο Φεστιβάλ, σε νησί. Όλα τα άλλα διοργανώνονται σε πόλεις όπως η Αβινιόν ή το Εδιμβούργο.

Εννιακόσιοι μουσικοί, στρατιωτικές και πολιτικές ορχήστρες, χορευτές και σημαιοφόροι συναπατρίζουν τη μουσική εκδήλωση, Crete International Tattoo. Με παρελάσεις στους δρόμους και
τις πλατείες των μεγαλύτερων πόλεων της Κρήτης οι μουσικοί θα σκορπίσουν τις μελωδίες τους για την συμπλήρωση των 70 χρόνων από τη Μάχη της Κρήτης και τα 2500 χρόνια της Μάχης του Μαραθώνα.

Στον καθεδρικό ναό του Αγίου Μηνά Ηρακλείου θα πραγματοποιηθεί μεικτή συναυλία ορθόδοξης μουσικής με τη συμμετοχή του Αρχιεπισκόπου της Κρήτης κ. Ειρηναίου, της Κρατικής Ακαδημαϊκής Καπέλλας του Γιουρλώφ, αλλά και των πιο γνωστών χορωδιών βυζαντινής μουσικής της Κρήτης.

Αστέρες του μπαλέτου από το Θέατρο Μπολσόι, το Κόβεντ Γκάρντεν του Λονδίνου, τη Μεγάλη Όπερα του Παρισιού και την ‘Οπερα του Βερολίνου ενώνουν τις εμπειρίες τους και παρουσιάζουν στο κοινό τις μοναδικές συνθέσεις τους.

Παραδοσιακοί χοροί, μεσαιωνική και κλασσική μουσική περιλαμβάνονται επίσης στις εκδηλώσεις που τελούν υπό την αιγίδα της Περιφέρειας Κρήτης.

Sardine Festival in Souda - Γιορτή σαρδέλας στη Σούδα

New traces indicate that Crete was habitated since 130,000 BC - Iχνη κατοίκησης στην Κρήτη από το 130.000 π.Χ.

A new archaeological discovery changes the prevailing notion that Crete was inhabited from 30,000 BC. The archaeological team of the University of North Carolina in the U.S., after analyzing soil and tools came to the concluson that Homo Erectus traveled to Crete and lived there almost 100,000 years earlier than originally believed, ie from 130,000 BC.

The scientists believe that Homo Erectus tribes inhabited the island migrating from areas of North and Sub-Saharan Africa. Archaeologists have found an ax and weapons similar to that  discovered in Africa which date back some 800,000 years ago.

Carl Ouegkman, geologist for the University of North Carolina stated that "By employing new radiocarbon techniques, we can now say with confidence that the tools and weapons that we uncovered have a time line of 50 up to 130,000 years of age," moreover, "the use of these tools by the island's inhabitants demonstrates that Minoans' first ancestors were not only excellent craftsmen but were also capable to built large structures. "

So far the oldest settlement that was found in Crete dates back to 7,000 BC.

ΝΕΑ ΥΟΡΚΗ

Μια νέα αρχαιολογική ανακάλυψη έρχεται να βάλει τέλος στην επικρατούσα άποψη πως η Κρήτη κατοικήθηκε από το 30.000 π.Χ. Η αρχαιολογική ομάδα του πανεπιστημίου Νορθ Καρολάινα στις ΗΠΑ, αναλύοντας χώμα κι εργαλεία, κατέληξε στο συμπέρασμα πως Homo Erectus ταξίδεψαν ως την Κρήτη και κατοίκησαν εκεί σχεδόν 100.000 χρονια νωρίτερα από αυτό που πίστευαν αρχικά, δηλαδή από το 130.000 π.Χ.

Οι επιστήμονες θεωρούν πως φυλές Homo Erectus κατοίκησαν στο νησί μεταπηδώντας από περιοχές της Βόρειας κι Υποσαχάριας Αφρικής. Οι αρχαιολόγοι βρήκαν τσεκούρια κι όπλα που είχαν συναντήσει ξανά στην Αφρική κάπου 800.000 χρόνια πριν.

«Με τις νέες τεχνικές ραδιοχρονολόγησης, μπορούμε πλέον να πούμε με σιγουριά πως τα εργαλεία και τα όπλα που βρήκαμε ξεκινάνε σε ηλικία από τα 50 και φτάνουν μέχρι τα 130.000 χρονια», τονίζει ο γεωλόγος Καρλ Ουέγκμαν του πανεπιστημίου Νορθ Καρολάινα, προσθέτοντας πως «τα σύνεργα αυτά αποδεικνύουν πως οι κάτοικοι του νησιού, οι προγονοί των πρώτων Μινωιτών, ήταν εξαιρετικοί τεχνίτες και ικανοί για μεγάλες κατασκευές».

Μέχρι στιγμής ο παλαιότερος οικισμός που ειχε βρεθεί στη Κρήτη χρονολογούνταν στο 7.000 π.Χ.

Confronting the Red Beetle - Η αντιμετώπιση του Κόκκινου Σκαθαριού

Lecture: "Problems and Troubleshooting against red palm weevils"

Speaker: Pantelis Vogiatzakis, Agriculturist for the Rural Economy Commission & the Regional Veterinary Unit of Chania.

The purpose of both events is to inform about the problems caused by the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus), to demonstrate how to deal with it, as well as what measures can be taken to limit its spread.

Red palm weevil is a harmful insect not native to Europe that can attack a wide range of palm trees, including date, coconut and areca palms. The insect was introduced to the EU through imports of palm plants. The insect has been found in all Mediterranean Member States (Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain), causing concerns about the future of palms in these areas. It excavates holes up to a meter long in palm tress that if left untreated damage fatally the palms.


Ομιλία με θέμα: «Πρόβλημα και Αντιμετώπιση του Κόκκινου Ρυγχωτού Σκαθαριού των Φοινικοειδών» θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Τετάρτη, 24 Αυγούστου στις 11 το πρωί, στην αίθουσα του Δημοτικού Συμβουλίου του Δήμου Αποκορώνου και την Πέμπτη, 25 Αυγούστου στην αίθουσα Πολλαπλών Εκδηλώσεων του Δήμου Κανδάνου –Σελίνου στην Παλαιόχωρα στις 10 π.μ.

Σκοπός και των δύο εκδηλώσεων είναι να γίνει ενημέρωση για τα προβλήματα που προκαλεί το σκαθάρι και να παρουσιαστεί ο τρόπος αντιμετώπισής του, καθώς επίσης και τα μέτρα που πρέπει να λαμβάνονται για τον περιορισμό της εξάπλωσής του.

Ομιλητής θα είναι ο Γεωπόνος της Δ/νσης Αγροτικής Οικονομίας και Κτηνιατρικής της Περιφερειακής Ενότητας Χανίων, κ. Παντελής Βογιατζάκης.

Nikki Rose, a Greek American Professional Chef-Instructor and Writer, has been hosting teachers, students, researchers and journalists in Crete for over 14 years through her project Crete’s Culinary Sanctuaries (CCS). Her focus celebrates, and helps protect Crete’s cultural and culinary heritage, which is the root of the Mediterranean Diet.
