Samaria Gorge closes for one day - Έκλεισε για μια μέρα το φαράγγι της Σαμαριάς
Τhe Forestry Directorate of Chania decided to shut down visiting to Samaria Gorge for one day after rocks fell due to strong winds in the area.
According to forecasts by the National Weather Service, less intense winds, would continue to blow throughοout the whole week.
Guests to Samaria Gorge are advised to be particularly careful, especially in places that have been marked for rock falls, and to carry the necessary equipment for their personal safety.

During last September (22nd - 27th of Sept., 2011) a week long bat research workshop was organised by Greena Ecological Consultancy in the small coastal village of Sougia in Crete. Geoff Billington was the chief leader of the project.

In 2008, 17 bat species of bats had been recorded on Crete, some of which only occur in the eastern Mediterranean. The European free-tailed bat (Tadarida teniotis) is the most widely recorded species, but also found on this island are Blasius’s horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus blasii), Long-fingered bat (Myotis capaccinii), Kuhl’s pipistrelle (Pipistrellus kuhli), Savi’s pipistrelle (Pipistrellus savi), Hanaki ‘s dwarf bat (Pipistrellus hanaki), plus Kolombatovic’s long-eared bat (Plecotus kolombatovici) and Mountain long-eared bat (Plecotus macrobullaris).

The team was involved in carrying out an inventory of bats in the southwest of Crete by a combination of bat detector surveys, trapping at underground site entrances and at ponds, over streams and in gorges, including the 17km long Samaria Gorge, which is one of the longest gorges in Europe, and roost visits mainly to underground sites, as Crete has over 2000 caves.

The research included field surveys with sound recordings in several different formats, trapping sessions in different locations each night, usage of triple high and single height mist nets, harp trap and a sonic lure. In the end, the bats were photographed and released.
