Cicada's abandoned exoskeleton (exuvia) - Έκδυμα τζίτζικα

As usual, cicadas are abundant in the summer season. Thus, it is not strange to find their abandoned exoskeleton left either on trees or on walls. This one was left at approximately one and a half meter from the ground on one of our buildings' wall. 

Καθώς τα τζιτζίκια αφθονούν το καλοκαίρι δεν είναι περίεργο να βρούμε έκδυμα τους πάνω σε δένδρα ή σε τοίχους. Το συγκεκριμένο βρέθηκε περίπου σε ύψος ενάμιση μέτρο απο το έδαφος, πάνω στον τοίχο ενός κτηρίου μας.

Exuvia is a term used to describe the remains of an exoskeleton that are left after the skin has molted (shed). In ancient Greek the cicada was called tettix, and in modern Greek is is called tzitzikas - both names are onomatopoeic.

Έκδυμα είναι ό,τι απομένει από τον παλιό εξωσκελετό μετά την έκδυση, αποβολή δέρματος. Το τζιτζίκι ή τζίτζικας, ονομαζόταν τέττιξ στα αρχαία ελληνικά, και οι δύο ορισμοί είναι ονοματοποιημένοι.
